豚レンサ球菌病の原因細菌 Streptococcus suis が養豚業者などにヒト化膿性髄膜炎などを発症させることが知られています。
Streptococcus suis は、羊血液寒天平板で α溶血性を示す連鎖球菌 (通性嫌気性グラム陽性菌) です。
中国四川省の奇病の原因として、本菌が疑われています。

ブログ主催者の私見: 化膿性髄膜炎を来たすので、抗菌薬による初期の感染症治療が適切で十分に行われないと死亡例が増加するであろう。細菌のサブタイプや薬剤感受性は、まだ発表されていないようである。

Up until now, S. suis infection in man has been rare and has had a good prognosis. However, disturbances of the eighth cranial nerve have been found in many patients, even causing permanent deafness in some.

Lutticken R. ら(1986年) は、症例報告と文献レビュー(PubMed, 要約)の中で、「現在までのところ、Streptococcus suis によるヒト感染症はまれであり、良好な経過であった。しかしながら、第８脳神経の障害が多くの患者にみられ、永久的な難聴を来たした症例もあった。」と述べている。
