“Our conclusion is quite simple: XMRV is not the cause of chronic fatigue syndrome,” said Greg Towers, of UCL [, University College London], who worked on the latest study. “All our evidence shows that the sequences from the virus genome in cell culture have contaminated human chronic fatigue syndrome and prostate cancer samples.”

英国の 慢性疲労症候群 chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)の患者は、ロンドン King’s College Hospital にて受診し、他の器質疾患を除外する医学的スクリーニングなどを受けた後、全患者 186人がCDC基準を満たし該当した。
xenotropic murine leukaemia virus-related virus (XMRV) または 近縁の murine leukaemia virus (MLV)の遺伝子は血液サンプル全186検体から検出されなかった。
XMRV 感染率については、北アメリカと欧州の集団間の差である可能性があり、欧州では前立腺がん組織の調査研究2件でもXMRVは検出されていない（米国2グループでは同組織内にXMRV発見) ことも説明可能である。

数年前に発見された Infectious Retrovirus レトロウイルス XMRV は、マウスでは発ガン性があります。
今回の研究(1)から、数百万の米国人が現時点では病原性のわからない本ウイルスに感染している可能性があることもわかりました。
